Manual therapy

Manual therapy is hands-on treatment — joint mobilisation and soft-tissue work — that releases stiff joints, eases tight muscle and restores movement.

In short

Manual therapy is hands-on treatment — joint mobilisation and soft-tissue work — that releases stiff joints, eases tight muscle and restores movement. It is most effective when combined with exercise therapy so the relief lasts.

What it is

Manual therapy is skilled, hands-on treatment delivered directly by your physiotherapist. By mobilising stiff joints and releasing tight or overactive muscle, it reduces pain and restores the movement your body has been guarding against.

On its own, manual therapy gives fast relief. Paired with a targeted exercise programme — as we always do at Ajira — it creates change that lasts.

What to expect

  1. Hands-on assessmentWe feel how your joints and tissues are moving to find the restriction.
  2. Targeted treatmentJoint mobilisation, soft-tissue release and stretching applied where needed.
  3. Paired with exerciseYou leave with movements that build on the relief between sessions.

Frequently asked questions

Does manual therapy hurt?

It should not be painful. You may feel firm pressure or a stretch, and some tenderness afterwards is normal, but your physiotherapist works within your comfort and adjusts to your feedback throughout.

How is manual therapy different from a massage?

Massage focuses on relaxing soft tissue. Manual therapy is a clinical treatment that also mobilises joints and targets specific structures identified in your assessment, as part of a wider treatment plan.

How many sessions will I need?

It varies with the condition, but manual therapy is most effective as part of a short course alongside exercise rather than as a standalone fix. We will give you a clear estimate after your assessment.
